Common Snapping Turtle
The scientific name for the common snapping turtle is: Chelydra
serpentina. This extremely popular turtle occurs naturally
throughout North America from the Atlantic coast to the Rocky Mountains.
Although it can reach weight's in excess of 70 pounds, most wild and
farm raised adults average around 35 pounds. The adult breeders at Five
Star Turtle Farms average around 47 pounds. The common snapping turtle,
sometimes referred to as the "mini crocodile tortoise" is highly prized
around the world for it's food value. In many cultures it is considered
to have medicinal values.
